The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Mawlid.
The Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, announced the holiday on behalf of Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
In the statement, the government congratulated Muslims nationwide and abroad, urging them to emulate the Prophet’s virtues of peace and compassion.
It further encouraged Nigerians of all faiths to use the celebration to pray for peace, security, and unity.
“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous Eid-ul-Mawlid. The occasion strengthens brotherhood, peaceful coexistence, and selfless service,” the statement read.
Additionally, the government appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding, security conscious, and supportive of national unity and development.
Eid-ul-Mawlid, observed in Rabi’ al-Awwal, commemorates Prophet Muhammad’s birth through prayers, lectures, processions, and charity.
In Nigeria, the festival is recognised as a national holiday, reflecting the country’s large Muslim population and religious traditions.
Beyond its spiritual meaning, the day also allows leaders to promote peace, tolerance, and unity amid national security challenges.
