NiDCOM, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, has urged restraint in the wake of demonstrations by certain Ghanaians who claim that Nigerians are responsible for the nation’s sins. The Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, criticized in a statement on Tuesday the “blanket” generalization of Nigerians in Ghana as criminals. “Nigerians are not criminals .

The head of NiDCOM was cited in a statement by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the agency’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, as stating, “They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fished out to face necessary sanctions”

“Ghana and Nigeria are like siamese twins. They are brothers and in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace like brothers.”

According to a widely shared video, several Ghanaians demonstrated and demanded that their government exclude Nigerians from the nation because their actions were allegedly out of character for Ghanaians.

Dabiri-Erewa, however, has urged Nigerians in Ghana to avoid becoming agitated or using violence as a result of the move. She reassured them that the problem is being handled by the nation’s authorities. She cautioned against using derogatory language on any side, but acknowledged that it might intensify the situation. She urged Nigerians to ignore films that are going viral showing Ghanaians destroying Nigerian businesses and property.

“There is no evidence to that and we must at all cost try to prevent any reprisal attacks,” Dabiri Erewa said.

The recent demonstration in Ghana that targeted Nigerians has been denounced by Aniekan Bassey, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organizations, as “deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, Senator Bassey, a member of the 6th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament, urged Ghana and Nigeria to uphold their longstanding friendship, respect for one another, and regional collaboration.
