Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, stated on Tuesday that the Federal Government is committed to preventing strikes in the educational field. at an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today, Alausa stated that President Bola Tinubu had instructed his staff to prevent a strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other organizations at higher education institutions around the nation.

He declared on the current affairs program, “The President has directed that not again in this country will ASUU, or tertiary institution trade unions go on strike,”

The minister stated that the government holds frequent meetings with the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and ASUU.

“It is just not promising, there has to be a lot of relationship building. Beyond that, the government is meeting its obligation with these unions. That is what has been lacking in the past governments. They sit with these unions, they are very good people. Over the years, government will just renege on those agreements,” he said.

Alausa also refuted certain reports that a strike in higher education was imminent. He said that the Federal Government’s reforms are having some effect because several public universities in Nigeria are receiving international rankings.

Alausa’s remarks follow the cancellation of the industrial action that the Yobe State University branch of ASUU had started on July 11, 2025. In order to resolve the remaining issues, the group has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Yobe State Government, according to branch head Ahmed Karage.
