Lagos State University (LASU) staff unions have declared an indefinite strike beginning Thursday, July 31, 2025, citing unresolved issues with the university management.
The decision, spearheaded by the Joint Action Committee (JAC); comprising ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NASU-LASU, and NAAT-LASU, was communicated in a letter addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.
“The indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University,” the letter read. “All members of staff of the University and its affiliate campuses are hereby directed to withdraw their services and vacate their official duty post with immediate effect.”
The notice was signed by representatives from each union, including Prof. Ibrahim Bakare and Dr. Sylvester Idowu (ASUU-LASU), as well as Oluwaseyi Lawal and Waheed Majekodunmi (SSANU-LASU).
The directive affects LASU main campus in Ojo, the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja, and the Epe campus. The strike has disrupted academic activities just days before the university was scheduled to begin its 2024/2025 second semester examinations on Monday, August 5.
The unions have vowed not to return to work until all demands are met by the appropriate authorities.
This indefinite strike marks yet another disruption in Nigeria’s public university system, underscoring ongoing tensions between staff unions and management across tertiary institutions.
