Nigerian singer and songwriter Johnny Drille has voiced concerns over the poor streaming revenue artists in Nigeria receive compared to their global counterparts.
Discussing the financial struggles of many African artists, Drille explained that low streaming values make it difficult for musicians to earn a decent income from digital platforms.
He stated that artists in Nigeria earn about $300 from one million streams, while those in countries like the United Kingdom can make as much as $5,000 from the same number of plays.
“For an artist, it can be quite challenging early on. Streaming from Africa is not the best in terms of numbers. I hear that if your 1 million streams are from Nigeria, it’s probably like $300. But the same 1 million streams from the UK, for example, could be about $5,000,” he said.
Despite this gap, Johnny Drille encouraged young musicians to remain focused and patient. He emphasized that consistent effort and dedication can lead to greater rewards, especially as artists gain international recognition through live performances and tours.
“It might be tough early on, but if you believe this is your path, just keep pushing. At some point, it will happen for you,” he advised.
