A peaceful protest was held Monday at the Lagos State House of Assembly by some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State against the purported planned installation of appointees at the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGA) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDA).
Cornelius Ojelabi, the state chairman of the APC, is also being demanded to be removed by the irate party members. The demonstrators, who were said to be representatives from each of the state’s 57 LGAs and LCDAs, assembled in big numbers while brandishing banners that read “Ojelabi Must Go” and “We Want Fresh Leadership.”
Since it started early Monday morning, the demonstration has garnered a lot of attention and increased security surrounding the Assembly site. A number of police officers were sent to keep the calm and stop any violence from breaking out. To defuse the tension, Kadri Hamzat, the state deputy governor, went to the protest location.
The ongoing problem, according to the deputy governor, is a party matter and will be settled as quickly as feasible. In a letter presented on behalf of the group, Segun Faleye, the head of the irate APC members, said that party members had been driven to the brink after allowing Ojelabi’s excesses.
Faleye said that Ojelabi’s mishandling of the 2025 Local Government elections, in which he reportedly put together a biased team to execute what he called “the worst primary election” in Lagos State’s history, was the pinnacle of his political scheming.
Faleye claims that in the 2023 presidential election, the opposition defeated the Ojelabi-led party in Lagos State for the first time since the Fourth Republic’s inception.
“This electoral disaster was followed by a shabby performance in the recently concluded local government elections. “We are tired of his selfish leadership and the plot of his team to derail from the progressive ideals championed by President Bola Tinubu,” he said.
