Peter Obi, the Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate, criticized the federal government’s N142 billion allocation for bus terminals while teaching and psychiatric hospitals received less than N100 billion. This highlights why Peter Obi on N142bn bus terminal budget raises concern for national development.
The former Anambra State governor said the government prioritizes poorly and ignores crucial sectors like healthcare.
On Friday, Obi wrote on X: “The difference between success and failure in national development is how you prioritize scarce resources.”
He added, “The recent approval of ₦142 billion for a bus terminal in each of the six geopolitical zones further highlights poor leadership, lack of focus, and incompetence.”
Obi emphasized that the total budget for all federal teaching hospitals and psychiatric institutions falls below ₦100 billion under the current 2024 budget.
He said, “Yet the government approved ₦142 billion for bus terminals. This is disturbing. Health is a critical sector, yet it remains underfunded and deteriorating.”
Citing a recent World Health Organization report, Obi noted that over 20 million Nigerians suffer from mental health issues.
He concluded, “This is not only a misplaced priority but a tragic irony for our country. This is not governance.”
