The Lagos State House of Assembly has begun deliberations on a bill to establish a legal framework for the creation and operation of the Lagos State Railway Corporation.
The proposed legislation, titled “A Bill for a Law to Establish the Lagos State Railway Corporation and for Connected Matters, 2025,” seeks to create an efficient and sustainable rail transport system across the state.
At a public hearing in Lagos on Wednesday, Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa said the initiative highlights the government’s commitment to modernizing transportation and improving citizens’ quality of life.
He said, on behalf of Hon. Mojisola Meranda, that the new corporation will boost mobility and cut travel time.
“This proposed legislation represents yet another bold and visionary step in the Lagos State Government’s continued efforts to improve the welfare and quality of life of its people,” he stated.
“Railway transportation remains a critical component of modern infrastructure. It ensures safe, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly movement of people and goods while driving trade, commerce, and economic growth,” he added.
Obasa also noted that Section 26 of the bill provides for the appointment of an inspector of Railways. The inspector will provide expert guidance, inspect trains and tracks, and ensure the safety and efficiency of rail operations.
Hon. Temitope Adedeji said the Lagos State Railway Corporation Bill will improve transportation and ease movement across the state.
Adedeji said the bill is timely and necessary to meet Lagos’s growing population and rising demand for reliable transport.
He said Lagos must urgently create a strong legal and institutional framework to efficiently regulate and operate its railway services.
