Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, son of Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudasiru Obasa, has become the new Agege Local Government (LG) Chairman following the resignation of Tunde Azeez.
Azeez, who had been on medical leave since the start of the current administration, stepped down due to persistent health issues that made it difficult to perform his duties. His resignation letter was read by Adeshina Haruna, Leader of the House, during a legislative session.
Council members read and approved the letter, then unanimously elected Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa as Agege LG Chairman on Wednesday. Lawmakers cited his commitment to Agege’s growth and the need to prevent a leadership gap as reasons for their support.
“His appointment is not only a testament to his credibility and experience but also a signal of the council’s commitment to ensuring that governance remains uninterrupted and responsive to the needs of the people,” they said.
The legislators also wished Tunde Azeez a speedy recovery and thanked him for his service. Azeez took medical leave two months ago and handed over duties to Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa as acting chairman.
Political observers in Agege were unsurprised by the transition. During the 2025 local government elections, Azeez; then the APC chairmanship candidate, was rarely seen at campaign events. His running mate, Vinod Obasa, handled most of the mobilization and grassroots engagement.
