Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 vice presidential candidate, attended Monday’s Julius Abure faction’s National Executive Council meeting.
Due to an internal dispute, the Labour Party has split into two groups, with Abure at the head of one and Nenadi Usman at the head of the other. The Usman-led group has traditionally been associated with Datti, the majority of elected MPs on the party’s platform, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and the party’s 2023 flag bearer Peter Obi.
Baba-Ahmed, however, claimed to have attended the NEC meeting in Abuja as a mediator after it was called by the Abure side. The party’s previous vice presidential candidate declared, “I am here as a peacemaker and I am also here to reconcile divergent opinions.”
Although he admitted to attending opposition coalition meetings against the ruling party, he maintained his membership in the Labour Party
“I am very proud to say that I did attend meetings of certain attempts of a coalition in Nigeria. Morally speaking, if your neighbourhood invites you to discuss security, you must attend.
“However, if you attend and they discuss other matters outside that, you are at liberty to restore yourself to your former position. I have attended and I have listened to the coalition attempts. Yes, I still remain in the Labour Party.”
Baba-Ahmed was praised by the NEC in session for aligning himself with the Abure-led leadership.
