The Federal Government has issued a flood alert for 15 states, warning of heavy rainfalls between September 4 and 8, 2025.

The Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre released the notice on Thursday. Moreover, the statement carried the signature of Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.

Flooding continues to endanger communities nationwide. Every rainy season, heavy rainfalls destroy homes, displace families, and spread deadly waterborne diseases. Furthermore, climate change and poor drainage systems intensify the risks, leaving residents more vulnerable each year.

The ministry identified 43 locations across 15 states as high-risk of heavy rainfalls. These include Ebonyi (Afikpo), Cross River (Edor, Ikom, Itigidi, Akpap), Kano (Gwarzo, Karaye), and Zamfara (Anka, Gummi, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi, Bukkuyum). In addition, Taraba (Dampar, Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gembu, Gun Gun Bodel, Kambari, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Bandawa, Ngaruwa), Abia (Eziama, Umuahia), Yobe (Geidam, Kanama, Potiskum), Plateau (Langtang, Shendam, Wase), Borno (Ngala), Imo (Okigwe, Otoko), Niger (Sarki Pawa), Sokoto (Sokoto, Wamakko, Isa, Shagari, Makira), Kaduna (Kafanchan), and Akwa Ibom (Oron) remain on high alert.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s flood response efforts recently gained international backing after China donated $1 million to support victims in northern states.

Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, signed the grant agreement with Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai in Abuja. He stressed that the donation would rebuild livelihoods and deliver relief materials transparently. Consequently, he assured citizens that government would ensure every kobo reaches those who need it most.

“This grant will complement national efforts and ensure assistance reaches the worst-hit communities,” Bagudu explained.

However, Ambassador Dunhai emphasised that China also suffers severe floods. Therefore, he reaffirmed solidarity, declaring both nations always stand together in times of crisis.

Earlier, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecast thunderstorms across several states between August 24 and 27. Moreover, it warned of flash floods in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano.

Consequently, as heavy rainfalls approach, authorities urge vulnerable residents to remain vigilant, take safety precautions, and cooperate with emergency services.
