Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Nigerian poet and spoken word artist Maryam Bukar Hassan, widely known as Alhanislam, on her appointment as a United Nations Global Advocate for Peace.
In a message shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Atiku described Hassan as a “gifted poet and fierce voice for justice,” commending her impact through the fusion of art and activism.
“She has used her art to uplift, empower, and unite,” Atiku said. “Her poetry has echoed with compassion, inspired peace, and amplified the hopes of countless young people. Maryam’s elevation is a proud moment for Nigeria and every young African woman with a dream.”
Hassan’s appointment was officially announced by the United Nations last week, recognising her longstanding advocacy for peace, education, gender equity, and human rights through spoken word poetry.
The Borno-born poet has performed on global platforms including the African Union and the UN Headquarters, using her voice to promote youth empowerment, dialogue, and social cohesion, especially in conflict-affected regions.
Hassan has also partnered with local and international organisations to create art-based peacebuilding initiatives, particularly in communities impacted by displacement and violence.
