The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced plans to unveil a redesigned trophy for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) just days before the start of the 2024 edition, which will be hosted in Morocco.

The unveiling is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in Morocco, ahead of the highly anticipated tournament, which will run from July 5 to July 26.

According to a statement released by CAF, the newly designed TotalEnergies WAFCON Trophy reflects the vision of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe to further develop and promote women’s football in Africa.

CAF confirmed that the launch will first be showcased across its official digital platforms in the afternoon. Later in the evening, a special activation event will be held in collaboration with the title sponsor, TotalEnergies.

In a major financial boost to the tournament, the WAFCON 2024 prize money has been increased, significantly from $975,000 in the previous edition to a total of $2.4 million. This reflects CAF’s commitment to investing in the growth and recognition of the women’s game on the continent.

The tournament will feature 12 national teams divided into three groups. Host nation Morocco headlines Group A, which includes Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Group B features Nigeria, the tournament’s most successful team, along with Botswana, Tunisia, and Algeria.

Defending champions South Africa will compete in Group C, alongside Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.

The opening match will take place at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, where Morocco will face Zambia.

The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has been organized by CAF since 1998 and serves as both the top-tier women’s football competition in Africa and a qualifying tournament for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Originally a home-and-away qualifying series, the competition was transformed into a biennial tournament format in 1998. It adopted the WAFCON branding in 2016 to align with global standards.

Nigeria has been the dominant force in WAFCON history, winning 9 of the 12 editions held so far and reaching the semi-finals in every tournament.

Equatorial Guinea secured back-to-back titles as hosts in 2008 and 2012, while South Africa claimed their first championship in 2022, becoming only the third country to win the title.

Other nations that have reached the final but are yet to win a WAFCON trophy include Morocco, Ghana, and Cameroon.
