Onyeka Onwenu Remembered One Year After Her Passing

The son of the late music legend Onyeka Onwenu, Tijani Onwenu, has honored his mother on the first anniversary of her passing. Known affectionately as the “Elegant Stallion,”

Onyeka passed away on July 30, 2024, in Lagos, not long after giving an enthralling performance at Mrs. Stella Okoli’s birthday party. After being taken to Reddington Hospital, she passed away in spite of attempts to save her life.

The musician was aged 72.

“A year ago, today,” Tijani posted on social media on Wednesday in remembrance of his mother. “RIP mom July 30, 2024”

Onyeka Onwenu was laid to rest in a private ceremony at Ebony Vaults and Gardens in Ikoyi, Lagos, on August 30, 2024. The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju hosted her burial ceremony.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who were close to the late artist, were among the dignitaries that attended the funeral.

Onyeka is renowned for her classic albums, including Dancing in the Sun and In the Morning Light, as well as her outstanding roles in Nollywood productions, like Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart.
