Seven farmers abducted last Saturday in Itaogbolu, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, have regained their freedom after five days in captivity.

A family member of one of the victims confirmed their release on Wednesday night, stating that the abductors initially demanded ₦100 million ransom, later reduced to ₦20 million. However, the families were only able to raise ₦5 million and some food items before the victims were released in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

“I’m happy to tell you that the kidnappers released all seven farmers on Wednesday night. They are back with their families,” the source said, preferring anonymity.

The victims are currently undergoing medical treatment following their ordeal.

Efforts to reach the Ondo Amotekun Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, were unsuccessful, while the Ondo state police spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, said he was not yet aware of the release.

This latest incident adds to the growing concerns over rising rural insecurity and the targeting of farmers in Nigeria’s southwest region.
