Monkeypox, commonly referred to as M-pox, has been confirmed in 12 cases across eight local government areas by the Ondo State Government.

On Monday, during a meeting of stakeholders on mpox vaccination in Akure, Victor Adefesoye, the Director of Disease Control at the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (OSPHDA), made this announcement.

“The disease is with us in Ondo State, particularly in these local government areas: Akoko South-West, Akoko North-West, Akoko North-East, Owo, Akure South, Akure North, Ondo East and Odigbo,” according to Adefesoye.

From August 11 to 21, the state will start vaccinating residents who are 18 years of age or older, as well as close family members, contacts, and medical personnel who have come into contact with infected individuals, he said.

“They already have the disease, and we will also vaccinate their close relatives, contacts, and health workers that have handled them. We anticipate that, though we have contacted them, some may still feel reluctant to take it. We encourage you as stakeholders to encourage them and be vaccinated,” he continued.

Adefesoye emphasized that the vaccine is free and safe, and that recipients will receive two injections of the vaccine at various times.

In order to promote a healthy society, he also exhorted locals to practice environmental and personal hygiene.
