A historic ₦500 billion agricultural program called “Produce for Lagos” will be unveiled on Wednesday, the Lagos State Government announced. The program’s goals are to combat food insecurity and guarantee long-term access to reasonably priced, wholesome food throughout the state.
At a press conference on Monday before its formal launch on Wednesday, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems Ms. Abisola Olusanya disclosed this information, stating that the program was intended to be a large-scale off-taker program. Through interstate cooperation and wise private sector investments, the initiative would strengthen the state’s food supply chain, she said.
According to Olusanya, the “Produce for Lagos” campaign embodies our dedication to utilizing private sector investment and interstate cooperation to create robust, sustainable food systems.
“On Wednesday, we will launch the ‘Produce for Lagos’ optical guarantee fund, as well as the initiative, which is largely a collaboration between the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the private sector.
“It is indeed possible to have a reorganised food system in Nigeria, and leading the market to production is a crucial step that has been missing for so long.
“All of the intervention of most states and the Federal Government was usually tailored towards production, but the marketing end of it, and the distribution and logistics, were always left a bit wanting.
“We want to minimise post-harvest loss. We want to ensure that with pro-harvest loss reduction, we will see a drop in food inflation, we will see a drop in health challenges, so it will be better for you and me.”
