Ethiopia has accused neighboring Eritrea of plotting a new war against Addis Ababa by working with a militant Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) faction. The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the accusation in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, obtained by AFP on Wednesday.
“The collusion between the Eritrean government and the TPLF has become more evident over the past few months,” the Ethiopian foreign minister said in the letter.
“The hardliner faction of the TPLF and the Eritrean government are actively preparing to wage war against Ethiopia.”
The renewed tension has reignited concerns of another Ethiopia Eritrea conflict in the troubled Horn of Africa.
The TPLF, which dominated Ethiopian politics for nearly three decades before being sidelined by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, was banned from political activities after the two-year civil war in northern Ethiopia ended with a peace deal in November 2022.
Ethiopia and Eritrea were once allies in the fight against the TPLF, but relations between both countries have deteriorated sharply in recent months. Analysts warn that the renewed hostility could destabilize the region.
The Horn of Africa, already struggling with conflict, drought, and humanitarian crises, faces growing fears that another Ethiopia Eritrea conflict could worsen instability and deepen suffering for millions.
