Nigeria’s D’Tigress maintained their supremacy in African women’s basketball on Thursday night, defeating Cameroon 83-47 to secure a spot in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket semifinals in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The quarterfinal matchup, which took place at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, was lopsided from the start.

Nigeria jumped out to a 41-29 halftime lead and then shut out the Lionesses in the second half, outscoring them 42-18 to win by 36 points. Amy Okonkwo led the scoring for D’Tigress, recording an impressive 18 points, six rebounds, and an assist.

Nicole Enabosi, who contributed 12 points, Victoria Macaulay, who contributed another 12, and Elizabeth Balogun, who finished with 11, all provided her with strong support. The Nigerian team’s depth and shared responsibilities are demonstrated by the fact that all 12 players on the squad saw action and scored. The players’ overall effort and discipline on both ends of the court were commended by coach Rena Wakama.

Nigeria’s unbeaten AfroBasket streak, which began in 2015, now stands at 27 games after its most recent victory.

The team and their supporters were even more pleased with Thursday’s victory because, ironically, their most recent defeat in the competition was against Cameroon in the semi-finals of that year.

D’Tigress had previously defeated Mozambique and Rwanda to easily advance through Group D. To guarantee first place and a direct route to the quarterfinals, they defeated Rwanda 92–45 in the tournament’s opening round and then defeated a tough Mozambican team 60–55.

In what could be an exciting semifinal matchup between two of the most successful women’s basketball nations on the continent, Nigeria will now take on Senegal.
