Blinding Lights, a hit song by The Weeknd, has become the first song to reach 5 billion streams on Spotify. Spotify announced the record on Instagram, and Canadian superstar Abel Tesfaye, popularly known as The Weeknd, quickly shared the news with his fans.
Released in November 2019 as the second single from After Hours, Blinding Lights became a global smash hit. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks and made history as the first song to remain in the top 10 for a full year. Billboard crowned it the Greatest Hot 100 Song of All Time in 2021.
The track’s latest milestone also secured it the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s “Top Hot R & B/Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century” list, covering 2000 to 2024. In January 2024, when the song reached 4 billion streams, The Weeknd expressed gratitude and said his music humbled him.
With 28 entries in Spotify’s Billions Club, The Weeknd has more tracks in the club than any other artist, cementing his place as one of the most streamed musicians of the decade.
