The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025.
In a heartfelt condolence message released by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin described the late Olubadan as a visionary traditional ruler whose short reign left a lasting impact on Ibadanland and its people.
Oba Owoade lamented that the monarch’s death came barely 12 months after ascending the throne, marking a great loss not only for the royal household but also for the cultural and spiritual leadership of the Yoruba people.
“Prayers and fond memories are what we have to remember our dearly departed royal father,” the Alaafin stated. “A good heart has stopped beating, and a good soul has ascended to heaven. We part with our beloved monarch in pain.”
Referencing spiritual reflections on the inevitability of death, Alaafin noted, “Every soul shall taste death. This is the law that governs life. It has no exceptions or exemptions.”
He praised the late Oba Olakulehin’s character and commitment, describing him as dedicated, large-hearted, and amiable, even in his advanced years. The Alaafin reflected on how, despite his strength, the Olubadan, at 90 years old, could not resist the final call of death.
Extending sympathy to the bereaved family and the people of Ibadanland, the Alaafin offered prayers for comfort and healing: “We pray for strength for the family. A good soul has passed on, and a good ruler has gone up to heaven. May the soul of the departed royal father be at peace with our Heavenly Father.”
The statement ended with warm wishes for peace and resilience, acknowledging the enduring legacy left behind by the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin and the sorrow that now envelops the ancient city of Ibadan.
