WAEC has denied reports claiming it issued a directive limiting subject choices for the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates. The Council called the rumors “unfounded assumptions” and urged schools and the public to ignore them.
Moyosola Adeshina, interim Head of Public Affairs, released a statement signed by the Head of National Office. WAEC reaffirmed that it had not issued any directive restricting students’ subject combinations for the 2026 WASSCE.
The Council emphasized that only the Federal Government, through its education authorities, can create or modify senior secondary curricula.
“WAEC wishes to categorically distance itself from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject. The Council did not issue any such directive(s) nor restrict the choice of students to offer any particular subject(s) for WASSCE (SC) 2026 as alleged,” the statement read.
The Council clarified its role: it implements government-approved courses and follows all legal and operational guidelines set by the Nigerian government.
“The development and regulation of Curricula in Nigeria is within the purview of the Federal Government. WAEC, as an examination body, only comes in to implement government policies via assessment,” it added.
WAEC assured stakeholders that any curriculum changes would follow due process. It stressed that no random changes would affect students.
Since its founding in 1952, WAEC has built a reputation for impartial and reliable student evaluation. It conducts exams in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia.
“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are hereby advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement concluded.
