President Donald Trump of the United States has ordered two nuclear submarines to be sent to unidentified areas in reaction to former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s remarks that he described as “highly provocative.” The current deputy head of Russia’s security council, Medvedev, had ridiculed Trump’s failing attempts to mediate a settlement in Ukraine and warned him about Russia’s nuclear weapons from the Soviet period.
Additionally, he called Trump “Sleepy Joe,” his own nickname for Joe Biden, in an attempt to mock him.
Trump threatened imposing severe sanctions on Moscow’s allies and cut the deadline for Russia to conclude the war in Ukraine from 50 days to two weeks, which caused tensions to rise.
Medvedev replied, “If a few words from a former Russian president can cause such a nervous reaction from the supposedly powerful President of the United States, then clearly Russia is right about everything and will continue its own way,”
“And as for the ‘dead economies’ of India and Russia and ‘stepping into dangerous territory’; well, let him recall his favourite movies about the ‘walking dead,’ as well as how dangerous the supposedly non-existent ‘Dead Hand’ can be.”
If a nuclear assault on Russia is detected, the Dead Hand is Russia’s mechanism for immediately initiating nuclear attacks. Trump said the deployment of the submarine was a precautionary measure and warned that Medvedev’s comments may have “unintended consequences.”
“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump answered.
“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences; I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
