Uganda has signed an agreement with the United States to host migrants denied asylum in America.
Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire Waiswa confirmed the deal in a statement posted on X on Thursday.
He explained that the arrangement targets Third Country Nationals who cannot stay in the United States and resist returning home.
Bagiire described the deal as temporary but gave no details about its duration or the number of migrants involved.
“This is a temporary arrangement with conditions including that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted,” Waiswa said in a statement.
Recall that on Wednesday, Ugandan foreign affairs officials denied a U.S. report that Uganda had agreed to host deportees from the United States, citing the lack of facilities to accommodate them.
Uganda already hosts over 1.6 million refugees, the highest figure in Africa, according to the United Nations.
The country has earned global recognition for its open-door refugee policy and community-based integration model.
