Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has flagged off the construction of smart markets in Okene and Okehi Local Government Areas, reaffirming her commitment to grassroots development and women empowerment despite her recent suspension from the Senate.

Speaking at the launch event on Sunday, Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that her legislative duties go beyond political office, noting that she has remained actively involved in delivering the dividends of democracy to her constituents.

The smart market initiative, described as a bold step to boost local trade and enhance economic participation, will feature 80 modern shops in each market, comprising 40 lock-up stores and 40 open stalls. The infrastructure will include solar-powered lighting, borehole water supply, modern sanitation facilities, power outlets in each shop, truck-friendly loading bays, and perimeter streetlights to ensure safety and functionality.

The projects are sited at Ihima Central Market in Oboroke (Okehi LGA) and a newly approved Community Market in Okene LGA. Both locations were selected based on their potential for commercial growth and accessibility.

According to the senator, the markets are expected to be completed and commissioned by November 2025, aligning with her second anniversary in office.

“This is about sustainable development and people-focused governance,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said. “Politics ends after elections. What matters is performance, and that must benefit everyone, regardless of political affiliation.”

The project is part of a broader legislative intervention plan which includes upcoming development initiatives across the district, and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan reiterated that her representation at the National Assembly remains inclusive, guided by the needs of the people.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by traditional rulers, women’s cooperatives, and youth organizations, all of whom praised the senator’s unwavering dedication and resilience, particularly in the face of political adversity.
