Security forces dispersed the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest led by Omoyele Sowore in Abuja’s Maitama area on Monday. A joint team of defense and police officers broke up the demonstration near the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) headquarters.
The protesters, including Barr. Aloy Ejimakor, Sowore, and several others, had gathered with banners and chants of “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now.” They demanded the immediate release of the detained IPOB leader.
Moments before the crowd scattered, protesters were heard warning police officers not to fire tear gas. Soon after, gunshots rang out, and the demonstrators fled to safety.
The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest reflects growing calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who remains in custody despite several court rulings ordering his release.
