Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has urged Nigerians to promote peace for national development. He called on families to raise children who will become peace ambassadors in their communities.
Ogunlowo, represented by ACP Olu Akinmoladun, spoke at the Eminent Ambassadors Peace Summit in Siun, Ogun State. The event was organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates with a focus on peace and justice.
Ogunlowo said peace must begin at the family level to spread across society and the nation. He explained that peace is not optional but a necessity for sustainable development and social harmony.
He added that families play a crucial role in shaping future leaders who value peace and unity, while describing peace as a condition that allows people to live with calmness and joy.
Ogunlowo warned that the absence of peace leads to anarchy, depression, and destruction within communities. He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining peace in Ogun State.
Dr Busayomi Soremekun, a newly inducted peace ambassador, described the honour as a call to service. He promised to promote peace, justice, and strong institutions in line with the United Nations SDGs.
Soremekun urged citizens to embrace dialogue and non-violent approaches in resolving conflicts.
Eleven individuals were also honoured as Eminent Peace Ambassadors and tasked with promoting peace in their regions.
Nigeria continues to face insecurity from terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across several regions. This is as the country ranks low on the Global Peace Index, reflecting ongoing challenges to national stability.
Experts also say misinformation, religious manipulation, and ethnic divisions remain threats to lasting peace in Nigeria.
