The Imo State Police Command has arrested three officers linked to a viral video showing them wearing Viking confraternity symbols.
The arrested officers are Inspector Obinna Peter, Corporal Amaechi Augustine, and Corporal Ejikeme Victor. They are now detained and will face an orderly room trial on Monday at the command headquarters.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said on Saturday that the arrest followed an investigation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma. He described the officers’ actions as an unacceptable display of misconduct.
Okoye explained that the viral video showed clear acts of indiscipline. He stressed that their behavior violated the ethics and values of the Nigeria Police Force. He added that the result of the trial would be shared with the public soon.
The viral footage, first shared by the anti-cultism group NaijaConfra, sparked public outrage. The group condemned the officers for promoting a cult responsible for several killings nationwide.
NaijaConfra said the officers were openly wearing Vikings berets in Owerri, showing loyalty to a dangerous cult. The group questioned how they could arrest cult members when they belong to one themselves.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Government said it will wait for the investigation’s outcome before taking further action.
Governor Hope Uzodinma’s Chief Press Secretary, Oguwike Nwachukwu, also said the probe is a commendable step. He added that the government would act once the police release their findings.
