Nigerian football has lost one of its most iconic figures with the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the age of 61.

Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” died after battling a prolonged illness, though the exact nature of his condition has not been publicly disclosed. His death was confirmed by a senior official of the Lagos State Government, though no formal announcement has yet been issued by his family.

Born on August 24, 1963, Rufai enjoyed a distinguished 20-year professional career that saw him compete in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. The goalkeeper was widely regarded as one of the finest shot-stoppers Nigeria has ever produced, earning legendary status through his performances on both domestic and international stages.

Rufai’s international career with the Super Eagles was particularly remarkable. He represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups and participated in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, most notably helping the team secure the 1994 AFCON title. His contributions to Nigerian football extended beyond mere statistics, as he became a symbol of excellence and reliability between the posts.

The timing of Rufai’s death adds to a particularly tragic day for world football, as it coincides with the loss of another prominent player. Liverpool’s Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother also died in a car crash in northwestern Spain on Thursday, when their vehicle veered off the road and burst into flames. The accident occurred on the A-52 road in Zamora and was caused by a burst tire while overtaking.

The Nigerian football community and fans across the continent continue to mourn the loss of Rufai, whose legacy as “Dodo Mayana” will forever remain etched in the annals of African football history. His death marks the end of an era for Nigerian goalkeeping and serves as a reminder of the significant contributions made by the country’s football pioneers.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements and official tributes are expected to be announced by the Nigerian Football Federation and Rufai’s family in the coming days.
