The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) reassured customers nationwide that it is taking steps to prevent delays in U.S.-bound deliveries.

The announcement follows President Donald Trump’s latest Executive Order. NIPOST said all postal items to the U.S. now require an $80 prepayment fee starting August 29.

According to a statement in Abuja, NIPOST is coordinating with U.S. Customs, the U.S. Border Protection Agency, and the Universal Postal Union to prevent service interruptions. The agency added that all countries exporting goods to the U.S. will face the new regulation.

The statement reads:

“On the United States Executive Order Suspending De Minimis Exemptions for Postal Shipments the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) wishes to inform our esteemed customers of a recent policy change by the Government of the United States of America, enacted through the Executive Order on “Suspending Duty-Free De Minimis Treatment for All Countries” under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

“This Executive Order affects all postal operators worldwide. The additional duty impacts global postal inflows into the U.S., not just shipments from Nigeria.”

“Effective August 29, 2025, NIPOST will charge a pre-paid customs fee of USD $80 (or its Naira equivalent) for all U.S.-bound postal items, except letters and papers.”

Global logistics companies are also adjusting operations. Airlines and cargo carriers now handle U.S.-bound shipments more cautiously. This may increase transit and processing times, causing delivery delays.

All shipments to the U.S. will undergo customs checks at the destination.

To minimize service interruptions, NIPOST collaborates proactively with the Universal Postal Union, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and airline partners.

The agency reassured customers:

“NIPOST remains committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient postal and courier services despite this global regulatory adjustment.”
