The Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA), in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has organized a comprehensive training session for facility managers on best practices in healthcare waste management.

The one-day capacity-building event was held at the Folarin Coker Staff Clinic, bringing together participants from the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, the Health Service Commission, and stakeholders from the private sector.

According to a statement released on Sunday, the training focused on empowering frontline facility managers responsible for maintaining healthcare facilities across Lagos with critical skills in managing medical waste effectively.

In her opening remarks, LASIAMA General Manager, Ms. Adenike Adekanbi, represented by the Head of the Facility Management Unit, Kunle Adesanya, emphasized that efficient healthcare waste management is essential for delivering high-quality healthcare services.

“We are here today to address a critical issue that impacts both public health and the environment,” Adesanya said. “This programme is designed to build capacity around waste segregation, collection, treatment, and safe disposal while ensuring compliance with global best practices.”

Delivering the keynote address, LAWMA Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, highlighted the increasing importance of sustainable healthcare waste practices in a megacity like Lagos.

“To continue to be the pacesetter that we are, we must keep innovating and investing in our people,” Gbadegesin said.

He praised the dedication of health workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus agenda, to continuous training for improved waste management infrastructure and environmental safety.

The initiative underscores the state’s proactive stance on healthcare and environmental protection, aiming to foster a cleaner, safer, and more efficient medical waste management ecosystem.
