A significant update to Gmail has been released by tech giant Google, which aims to give users more control over their digital communication and declutter inboxes by enabling users to unsubscribe from email lists with a single click.

Gmail’s new feature, called the “Manage Subscriptions”  tool, allows it to automatically sort emails from active subscriptions and provides users with easy-to-click opt-out links next to those messages.

Google’s Director of Product Management, Chris Doan, recognized the growing annoyance that many users experience from being inundated with subscription emails in a blog post announcing the update.

Doan wrote, “It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of subscription emails clogging your inbox,” Doan wrote.  “With Gmail’s new ‘Manage subscriptions’ feature, you can view and manage your subscription emails, making it easy to unsubscribe from the ones you no longer want, all from a single place.”

Currently available to Gmail web users, the update is anticipated for iOS and Android users later in July.

Google is launching new artificial intelligence-powered safeguards to counteract scam emails in addition to inbox management. As part of its larger email security strategy, the company claims that its AI-based defenses are now able to block scam messages with an effectiveness rate of 35%.

The update comes after major retailers recently warned of phishing attempts, which involve phony emails asking users to update their payment details under the pretense of renewing their memberships.

Google’s continuous efforts to improve user experience and security through more intelligent, user-friendly features driven by AI and streamlined design are reflected in Gmail’s new tools.
