The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has raised alarm over the rising number of road crashes and fatalities in Nigeria, revealing that 2,838 lives were lost in 5,281 crashes recorded between January and June 2025.

Speaking at a half-year strategy session in Abuja, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed stated that 39,793 persons were involved in auto crashes during the period, with 17,818 rescued, marking a 3.9% increase in crashes and 2.2% rise in fatalities compared to the same period in 2024.

Mohammed added that 290,887 traffic offenders were arrested for 319,798 violations, showing a rise in enforcement activities. Passenger volume also surged, with over 30 million travelers using 2.3 million vehicles on national roads, particularly in Anambra and Kano States, which alone accounted for 6.5 million passengers.

Highlighting institutional strides, he noted the recent passage of an amendment Bill by the House of Representatives to strengthen FRSC operations. The Corps also launched the National Crash Reporting Information System and FRSC Mobile App to enhance data reporting of road crashes and public engagement.

The corps marshal announced plans to establish a Health Management Office to improve medical care for personnel, while reaffirming the FRSC’s resilience amid increasing road safety demands. He concluded with a renewed call for stakeholder collaboration, discipline among operatives, and stricter enforcement in the remaining months of 2025.
