US President Donald Trump furthered his rift with former supporter Elon Musk on Sunday by calling the former ally’s creation of a new political party, America Party “ridiculous.” After Musk stated that he wished to disrupt the current US political system, Trump further called the SpaceX and Tesla mogul a “train wreck” who had gone “off the rails.”
As the head of the cost-cutting “Department of Government Efficiency,” the richest man in the world was practically inseparable from Trump. However, they had a major falling out over the president’s “big beautiful” tax and spending mega-bill.
On his way back to Washington from his golf club in New Jersey, Donald Trump told reporters, “I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party,” before boarding Air Force One. “It’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to confusion. Third parties have never worked. So he can have fun with it, but I think it’s ridiculous,” he remarked.
Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa, declared on Saturday that he will start the so-called America Party in an effort to overthrow the “one-party system” in the US.
Musk has pledged to do everything in his power to unseat senators who supported the president’s large domestic spending proposal, which he claims would blow up the US debt.
Regarding domestic spending, the former head of DOGE, who spearheaded a massive effort to reduce federal spending and eliminate employment, compared Trump’s Republicans to the Democrats. Musk said on his own social media platform, X, that “we live in a one-party system, not a democracy, when it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft.”
It was unclear if Musk has registered the party with US electoral authorities and he provided few details of his proposal, but it might give Republicans trouble in the 2026 midterm elections and beyond.
Donald Trump doubled back on his attack on Musk on his Truth Social network while still on Air Force One, demonstrating how delicate the subject may be for him.
“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats.”
