At least 12 people have died and over 230 others have been hospitalized in various local government areas (LGAs) in Niger State due to a cholera outbreak.
Shiroro Local Government Area was where the outbreak was initially discovered on Sunday. At least six LGAs, including Minna, Bosso, Shiroro, Magama, Bisa, and Munya, had been affected by the cases as of Wednesday. According to medical officials, 239 people were impacted and were presently undergoing treatment at different primary healthcare facilities.
The state government has responded by establishing a cholera isolation center in Minna, located in the former wing of the Late Sen. Idris Kuta Primary Healthcare Center. Ibrahim Dangana, the commissioner for primary healthcare, affirmed the deployment of a multi-sectoral response team to stop the disease’s spread.
He said, “We have established treatment and isolation centres in the affected LGAs to contain the outbreak.
“Aggressive sensitisation campaigns are ongoing, targeting religious organisations like CAN and Islamic groups, as well as the eight emirates in the state”
He acknowledged the assistance of donor organizations and praised Governor Mohammed Bago for his prompt action. The areas most affected were Chanchaga, Minna, Bosso, and Shiroro, according to Ibrahim Idris, director of public health at the Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare.
