Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, swore in three new members on Tuesday following the August 16, 2025 bye-elections.

The elections filled vacancies created by the deaths of four lawmakers and the nomination of Dennis Idahosa as Senator Monday Okpebholo’s running mate for the 2024 Edo governorship race.

Earlier, the Green Chamber had lost four members; Ekene Adams (Kaduna), Isa Dogonyaro (Jigawa), Oriyomi Onanuga, and Olaide Akinremi (Oyo), between 2024 and 2025 due to illness and other causes.

To replace them, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted bye-elections across affected constituencies in August.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of the five seats, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured one.

On Tuesday, Mukhtar Rabiu (Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa), Joseph Bagudu (Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna), and Omosede Igbinedion (Ovia South/Ovia West/Ovia North-East Federal Constituency, Edo) took their oaths before Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

However, Elegbeji Ayola (Sagamu/Ikenne/Remo North, Ogun) and Oyekunle Sunday (Ibadan North, Oyo) were absent.

The House did not provide reasons for their absence. Oyekunle Sunday is the only PDP lawmaker among the five newly elected members.
