The US government has paused work visas for Nigerian and other foreign truck drivers, citing safety and job security concerns.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the decision on Thursday. He said the growing number of foreign drivers on US roads threatens American truckers’ lives and limits their job opportunities.

Rubio stated, “Effective immediately, we are pausing all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers. The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks is endangering American lives and undercutting American truckers’ livelihoods.”

This action is part of President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration crackdown since resuming office in January 2025.

New regulations also require travelers from countries with high visa overstay rates or inadequate travel databases to pay a $5,000–$15,000 bond for certain visas.

Additionally, the US Embassy in Nigeria instructed all visa applicants to provide social media handles from the past five years. Failure to comply may result in visa denial and future disqualification.
