The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has banned all forms of student sign-out celebrations.

In a circular issued on Tuesday in Benin, the university’s registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, announced the ban and warned that violators would face severe disciplinary actions.

According to the circular, the University of Benin administration warned that infractions could lead to rustication, expulsion, or certificate withdrawal.

Bobola said the decision came after a Monday meeting, which reaffirmed a previous Senate resolution prohibiting such activities on campus.

“The management declared that no sign-out celebration of any kind, including signing on T-shirts and playing of music, will be tolerated,” he said.

He added that the university would not condone any disruptive behavior or unauthorized gatherings during or after examinations.

“Indiscriminate parading around the campuses in any brand of vehicle will not be permitted,” the circular warned.

Bobola said the university will block unapproved vehicles from entering the campus during the final week of second-semester exams.

“The management also prohibited large gatherings around faculties, schools, or institutes after examinations,” he said.

“Photographers will not be permitted to put up photo stands or galleries for the purpose of such celebration.”

He advised parents and guardians of final-year students to stay away from faculty or school premises, especially on the last day of examinations.

Bobola emphasized that the University of Benin made the decision to uphold discipline, order, and academic decorum on campus.

“Members of the university community are invited to kindly note the above position for strict compliance. Any violation will attract severe disciplinary sanctions, including withdrawal of certificate, rustication, and expulsion of violators,” he warned.

The University of Benin joins several other institutions, including Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Federal University Lafia, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Kaduna Polytechnic, and the University of Port Harcourt, in banning sign-out events.

Final-year students celebrate sign-out by writing farewell messages on white shirts to mark their last days on campus.
