Despite English being Liberia’s official language, U.S. President Donald Trump raised eyebrows when he asked Liberian President Joseph Boakai where he learnt to speak English “so beautifully” during a White House luncheon with African leaders on Wednesday.

Following two other African presidents who utilized translators, Boakai gave brief remarks in English before Trump posed the question to the Liberian leader.

According to an article on the Washington Post, Trump said, “Thank you, and such good English,” as if amazed by Boakai’s proficiency, and then he inquired, “Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?”

Boakai laughed in response, but Trump persisted and inquired, “Where? Were you educated?  Where?

” Yes, sir” , said Boakai.  “In Liberia?” inquired Trump.  The Liberian leader replied, “Yes, sir.”

“That’s really fascinating.  “It’s a beautiful language,” Trump said.  “I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.”

Trump’s response recalled similar remarks he had made in the past that were criticized for being culturally insensitive.

During a news conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year, President Trump made the same gaffe.  “Go louder. I can’t understand a word he’s saying.”  he said to an Indian journalist, who asked a question in English.

As a result of Liberia’s distinct past, English is the country’s official language.  With assistance from the American Colonization Society, which started establishing people in the area in 1822, former slaves and freeborn African Americans established the West African country.  In 1847, Liberia proclaimed its independence.

Trump’s inquiry is seen to have ignored Liberia’s longstanding links to the English language and its American-influenced beginnings, even if Boakai seemed unconcerned by Wednesday’s encounter.
