President Donald Trump of the United States has confirmed that he will attend Sunday’s FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, highlighting the strengthening relationship between his government and FIFA.

The news followed FIFA’s symbolic decision to bolster its presence in the US by establishing a new office in Trump Tower in New York. Along with co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada and Mexico, the nation is now holding the first enlarged version of the Club World Cup.

Chelsea will play either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s final at the same stadium that will host the 2026 World Cup final.

Donald Trump is leading a White House task team tasked with managing the preparations for both FIFA tournaments. Earlier this year, Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl.

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, praised the US government’s role in the growth of the sport. “We have received tremendous support from the government and from the president through the White House taskforce for both the Club World Cup and the World Cup next year,” Infantino stated. “FIFA is a global organisation, and to be global you have to be local, you have to be everywhere. That’s why we are opening in New York,” he continued.

FIFA already has an office in Miami, and the Trump Tower site is seen as a calculated move to strengthen ties with US law enforcement.

However, because of his divisive immigration policies, Trump’s participation in international sports continues to provoke discussion. Concerns over fan accessibility for upcoming international competitions have been raised by reports that his administration is considering extending the travel restriction to 36 more nations.

“FIFA is a global organization, and fans will be welcomed to the US,” Infantino said in an effort to soothe those concerns.
