The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which is best known for creating world heritage sites, is allegedly biased against Israel and supports “divisive” causes, according to the United States, which announced on Tuesday that it is leaving UNESCO. According to the State Department spokesperson, “the United States has no national interest in continuing its involvement in UNESCO.”

Under President Donald Trump, who also issued an order in 2017 to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization during his first term, the US exit was anticipated. After that, US membership was restored by President Joe Biden.

UNESCO is working “to advance divisive social and cultural causes,” according to State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, and is unduly preoccupied with UN sustainability goals, which she characterized as a “globalist, ideological agenda.”

Bruce also emphasized the body’s alleged anti-Israeli stance in accepting Palestine as a state. He stated that the admission of the “State of Palestine” as a member state, “is highly problematic, contrary to US policy, and contributed to the proliferation of anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization”.

The UN agency states that its goals are to advance cultural awareness, scientific collaboration, and education. The Great Barrier Reef off Australia, the Serengeti in Tanzania, the Athens Acropolis, and the Pyramids of Egypt are just a few of the heritage sites it is responsible for protecting.

The decision by Trump to withdraw the US from UNESCO was not the first. In the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan canceled US membership, claiming the agency was corrupt and pro-Soviet. George W. Bush was president when the United States reentered.
