Five people lost their lives on Friday night after a Dangote Cement truck rammed into a tricycle in Ogun State.

The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. at Alapoka Village along the Papalanto–Ilaro Road in Yewa South Local Government Area.

According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the truck lost control due to brake failure.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the tragedy on Saturday, describing it as “a fatal and avoidable crash.”

He explained that the unregistered tricycle carried five passengers who all died instantly when the truck crushed the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said the truck driver did not notice the collision until the vehicle’s tyre flattened the tricycle completely.

Shortly after the crash, Acting TRACE Head Adedayo Omonayajo and Ilaro Divisional Commander Salako Idowu led a rescue team to the scene.

However, tension quickly rose as angry residents tried to attack the officers, blaming them for arriving late.

The Amotekun Corps and other security agencies intervened promptly to restore calm and prevent further violence.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps later moved the victims’ remains to a nearby morgue.

This latest incident adds to the growing list of fatal crashes involving Dangote Cement trucks across Nigeria.

In November 2024, another Dangote truck caused multiple deaths in Lagos and Ogun after its brakes failed.

Likewise, in June 2021, a similar crash in Ogun killed two people and led to mob outrage. The angry crowd eventually set the truck ablaze.

Recently, reality TV star Phyna criticized the Dangote Group after a company truck killed her sister, reigniting public anger over safety standards.

Meanwhile, TRACE has appealed to truck drivers to service their vehicles regularly and follow road safety rules to prevent future tragedies.
