Troops of the Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have successfully dislodged armed herders during a routine patrol in Benue State, recovering an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and ammunition.

The Acting Media Information Officer for OPWS, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, said in a statement on Friday in Makurdi that the operation took place on Wednesday at Mbakyior Outpost and Agidi Community in Gwer East Local Government Area.

According to Zubairu, the rifle was found at a suspected crossing point used by armed herders in Mbakyior. Upon sighting the troops, the suspects fled and opened fire in an attempt to resist interception.

“In a swift and coordinated response, our troops returned fire, forcing the armed herders to retreat. A subsequent search of the scene led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, a mounted magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition,” he stated.

The military said it has intensified patrols in the area to prevent further incursions, boost civilian confidence, and ensure residents can safely carry out their socio-economic activities.

The Force Commander, OPWS, Maj.-Gen. Moses Gara, commended the troops for their resilience, professionalism, and tactical discipline. He urged them to remain proactive and responsive to intelligence provided by local communities, reaffirming the mission’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa States.
