In order to honor former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Tinubu has called an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for Tuesday. The president stated that Buhari “placed the interest of Nigeria above personal interests.”
In a condolence note that he personally signed, Tinubu said he was “deeply saddened and grieved by the news of the former President’s passing.”
On Sunday, July 13, 2025, the former president passed away in a UK hospital.
“He was a patriot, soldier, and statesman at his core”, he said of former President Buhari. “he served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, first as a military leader from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023. Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life.
“He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential. He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn,” Tinubu said, adding that Buhari’s legacy of sacrifice and service would live on.
“In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, with whom I have been in constant touch, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him.”
He offered his condolences to the people and government of Katsina State, with a special emphasis on the Daura Emirate’s traditional leaders and citizens.
“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul”
For seven days starting today, he ordered all national flags to fly at half-staff nationwide. “I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour” he stated.
While pleading with Allah to pardon his transgressions and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, he promised that the Federal Government would give President Buhari all the state honors due to his enormous contributions to our nation.
“And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness” he concluded.
