Under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, President Bola Tinubu has authorized ₦712.3 billion for a comprehensive upgrading of Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, stated that the project, which was given to CCECC, will be finished in 22 months and will involve access road development, runway rehabilitation, apron extension, and terminal rebuilding.
Furthermore, ₦49.9 billion will be allocated for improved perimeter security with metal fencing, solar lighting, and an intruder detection system, and another ₦24.3 billion would be used to extend the domestic wing’s apron.
The delighted minister called the investment “the largest coordinated aviation infrastructure upgrade in Nigeria’s recent history” and stated, “This is a heartwarming moment for the aviation sector.”
The beginning of a larger Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) initiative to include the private sector in operating unproductive airports was also marked by Keyamo’s announcement of a 30-year concession of Enugu’s Akano Ibiam International Airport to the Aero Alliance Consortium.
“It is no secret that the government spends the profits from Lagos, Abuja and Kano to keep smaller airports running.
“This model is unsustainable,” he declared. He underlined that compared to earlier concession initiatives that were abandoned in 2023, this new strategy will be more open and inclusive.
In order to enhance aviation operations in poor visibility situations, the larger infrastructure renewal comprises runway and illumination renovations in Lagos, Port Harcourt (₦42.1bn), and Kano (₦46.3bn).
