Nigeria has renewed its push to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026, set for the US, Canada, and Mexico. On Saturday night, September 6, the Super Eagles defeated Rwanda’s Amavubi 1-0 at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ new striker Tolu Arokodare sealed Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification hopes with a crucial 51st-minute goal. This win marked Nigeria’s second in CAF Qualification Group C. The first came in March when they beat Rwanda 2-0 at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

The night carried some disappointment, as Victor Osimhen exited in the 35th minute after an injury. Coach Eric Chelle brought in former Rangers striker Cyril Dessers, who made his competitive debut for the Super Eagles.

Despite dominating play, Nigeria struggled to break Rwanda’s defense as the first half ended 0-0.

At the restart, Coach Chelle made a tactical substitution, replacing Frank Onyeka with Arokodare. The decision paid off quickly. After several rebounds in the box, Arokodare struck home in the 51st minute to give Nigeria the lead.

Rwanda came close to an equalizer in the 67th minute when Djihad Bizimana’s header went narrowly wide. Just minutes later, Moses Simon tested the goalkeeper with a fierce strike, but his effort was saved.

In the dying moments, Nigeria pressed to extend their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification lead with a second goal but failed to convert. The match ended 1-0, securing a vital win for the Super Eagles.
