Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has confirmed he will honour a police invitation scheduled for Wednesday, August 6, at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja. The invitation comes from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit, amid an ongoing investigation linked to a petition filed against the activist.

Sowore, who contested under the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, had earlier written to the police demanding details of the petition and the identity of the complainant.

In response, the police, via a letter signed by DCP Akin Fakorede, stated that the petition would be disclosed to Sowore only when he presents himself at the scheduled interview.

“I refer to your letter dated August 5, 2025… and respectfully notify your client Mr. Omoyele Sowore that… a new date, August 6, 2025, by 11:30 a.m. has been scheduled for his interview,” the letter to Sowore’s counsel, Tope Temokun Chambers, read in part.

In his own statement, Sowore raised concerns over transparency in the process. “The IGP Monitoring Unit has scheduled my interview for tomorrow at 11:00 AM, yet they have refused to provide a copy of the purported petition against me,” he said, calling the process a “sinister plan.”

Nevertheless, he pledged to appear as requested, urging supporters to join him. “I will be going with a full house… Let every freedom fighter, every citizen of conscience, every voice of resistance assemble early tomorrow,” he posted via WhatsApp and social media.

The case underscores ongoing tensions between law enforcement agencies and civil rights activists in Nigeria.
