Omoleye Sowore, activist and publisher, faces five charges for creating false posts against President Bola Tinubu on social media.

The Federal High Court in Abuja listed X (formerly Twitter) and Meta, owners of Facebook and Instagram, as co-defendants.

Prosecutors alleged Sowore used his verified X account on August 25 to post, “This criminal, Tinubu (@OfficialABAT) actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

Government prosecutors said the remarks violated Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024. The law bans false online statements that could cause disorder.

They argued Sowore’s remarks sought to incite discontent and disenchantment with the president. Sowore appeared in court as the matter continues.
