The Nigeria Police Force explained that it arrested Omoyele Sowore to ensure fairness in prosecuting those involved in Monday’s protest in Abuja.

Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, while addressing journalists on Thursday, said Sowore’s arrest was after he allegedly led protesters into a restricted area during a demonstration supporting Nnamdi Kanu.

Hundeyin noted that leaving Sowore out of the legal process while charging other protesters would have amounted to selective justice.

“If we move from there to charge some people to court and leave their leader, that will not be fair”.
“In the spirit of fair play and to ensure we serve justice, we arrested Omoyele Sowore today,” Hundeyin said

Hundeyin promises that he will not be in detention beyond the legally permissible period and they won’t delay his arraignment.

“Like the others, he won’t spend up to 24 hours with us. We will prosecute him once we finalize the charges,” Hundeyin stated. “If everything goes as planned, he’ll appear in court today.”

Sowore was arrested on Thursday at the FHC in Abuja, after showing solidarity with Kanu during a court session.

Sowore has consistently demanded Kanu’s release and, on Monday, led a protest in Abuja calling for the IPOB leader’s freedom.
