Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in 2023, has argued in favor of a five-year term as Nigeria’s president. This was said by Obi in Bauchi on Friday during his courtesy visit to Governor Bala Mohammed of the state. He said that there should be no second term for president and that the president should serve a five-year term, as is the case in South Korea.

He said, “I’ve said it and I want to say it again in this government house that if I have the opportunity, we should stop having a second tenure for president.

“It should be five years straight, so that people can come in knowingly they have a job to do.

“What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest of the years thinking about their next tenure. We must stop it, let’s face the real job, do your own and go,”

The 2027 presidential candidate vowed not to hold office for more than four years and insisted that he would only serve one term if elected president of Nigeria in 2027. According to Peter Obi, he would make sure that political parties outnumbered the elected officials.

He continued, “I want the party to be bigger than the president and the governors so that we can have orderliness,”

In response, Bala Mohammed urged Obi to rejoin the PDP, claiming that it is his rightful place. Mohammed went on to say that ego, disagreements, and personal interests could not be used to conduct politics in Nigeria and urged all opposition parties to align their interests for the benefit of Nigerians.
